Boutique amps before boutique amps were a ‘thing’.

Elgen amps were hand-built in the 1960s and 1970s to an incredibly high standard. They don’t often come up for sale as they were built in a pretty limited amount & most of the amps were exported to the USA, where they were known to have been used by Peter Frampton & Steve Marriott from Humble Pie, Nick Simper (Deep Purple) & Warhorse.

Like Marshalls, the early amps were based off of the 6G6 Bassman Circuit. However this is one of their later builds when they had settled on a more consistent design with the Lead (guitar) & Bass 100 watt amps. Whilst this is labled as a Bass amplifier, from comparing the schematics with the internals of this one, elements of both designs ended up being implemented. Because this amp has Bass & Treble EQ in the preamp & Top Boost & Presence controls in the feedback circuit, it works just as well for Guitar as it does for Bass.

It’s powered by three 12AX7 for the preamp & phase inverter & four EL34 in the power section & the insides of the amp is all original, complete with 1973 dated Partridge transformers, mustard and tropical fish capacitors & hand wired throughout.

The amp is available as just the head unit, it can converted to a combo, or can come with a matching T&T cabinet to your specification.

Rebuild

It’ll be be serviced & the filter caps replaced with top quality F&T/TAD electrolytic capacitors. All other components (e.g. coupling capacitors and resistors) will be tested, and where needed/appropriate replaced with the same NOS or as-similar-as-we-can components.

Revoice

As this is a beautifully made vintage amp we have not made any changes to the voicing of this amp. Although this was built as a Bass amp, it sounds just as amazing with a guitar pluged in.

Refurb

With regards to refurbishment, we’ll re-tolex the case as the original is worn & paint splattered. Other cosmetic work will be replacing the rusty vent mesh, cleaning up the rust spots on the lush pink faceplate & replacing the control knobs with identical new ones. The old hardware will be provided, and can be put back in case you want to keep the relic’d look.
