About Us

Who, what, why?

Seekers of truth & purveyors of tone

Truth & Tone is a one-man guitar amplifier rebuild and refurbish band based in the south-eastern suburbs of melbourne.

T&T aims to offer the customers the peace of mind & guarentees of buying from a professional combined with the low prices buying from an online marketplace.

We keep costs low by sourcing vintage & modern used amps from specialist guitar auctions & online marketplaces like Facebook & Ebay.

We then check and service each amp, and carry out any work needed, not just bring them up-to-scratch but beyond. Improving the components, circuits and reliability so you get the best amp possible.

Any repairs, enhancements & upgrades to the amps are carried out using NOS or new components from suppliers such as Mouser, Evatco and Tube Audio.

Boutique-ish (re-)builds at pre-loved prices

By buying used modern amps, or not-so-known vintage amps, we can focus time & budget on improving/enhancing/rebuilding the components that really make a difference to the sound and feel of an amp.

Improvements like upgrading signal path components, rebuilding the power supply, redesigning the pre-amp, revoicing the tone stack, and always, always giving an amp a proper lead dressing.

Everything we do is to make an amp a bit more special, whether using tried & testing mods from some of the guru-level amp techs, or our own in-house enhancements.

Where we can, we use ‘pre-loved’ gear & parts to keep costs down & where it’s critical we use top quality new stock from manufactors such as F&T, Nichicon, Vishay & KOA Speer.

We stock a collection of used speakers, and new & used cabs, giving you the chance to try different configurations & the option to upgrade.

Taking the myth out of mojo

Lets be honest, there’s a lot of bullshit flying around about ‘Tone’ & how to get it.

From special vintage years, magical NOS diodes, carbon vs metalized polytastic capaciteristic wibble-knobs, it’s hard to see whats based in fact & what’s just the opinion of the loudest shouty person in the forum.

We prefer a simpler approach. Find out what sounds good. Work out why it sounds good. Make amp sound good.

Whatever we do, we’re as transparent as possible about what we’ve done, why we did it, what we used, & how much it cost.

We provide component lists, schemas & spice models for all of our work, so anyone who’s interested can do it themselves.

If you’re interested, check out the build docs in each of the amp sections. If you have any questions check out our FAQs or feel free to send us a message.
